There is no one brand that works well for this, so don't get married to a brand name or a product description. Here's what you need:
(1) A non-irritating face cleanser. I use Clean & Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin or Neutrogena One Step Gentle Cleanser. Seriously, a too-strong cleanser will just make your skin break out more.
(2) If you main problem is blackheads, get an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) or BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) product. What this does is gently exfoliate the surface of your skin PLUS the inside of the pores, which loosens and quickly gets rid of blackheads. I use Paula’s Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid, but you could also use Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion or Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion (either the regular one, or the one for Sensitive Skin).
(3) Lastly (and this is the real gets-rid-of-blemishes part), you need a 5% or 10% Benzoyl Peroxide product. I would suggest Clean and Clear Persa-Gel 10, Maximum Strength, but if that is too strong and your skin gets too dry, try Paula’s Choice Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution, which only has 5%.
Incidentally, I don't work for Paula's Choice, or anything, and you certainly don't need to use those products (which you can only get from the website), it's just that I found them to be cheaper than all the alternatives.
Sounds like you're already on the right track by refusing to believe that ProActiv hype and crazy marketing! Good luck!

NEUTROGENA! it works so good..and it makes your skin feel soft and smooth...get the oil-free acne wash...black head scrub, and the on the spot acne treatment cream/lotion stuff....and if you wear make up, then buy the bar of soap (it's orange & made specifically for acne-prone skin)...it smells like crap, but you'll get used to it. and idk if you're a girl or guy or what, but if you're a girl & u wear make up, then buy the neutrogena make up products....they're a little more expensive than say..cover girl...but they cover acne up great,

good luck..and I hope it works for you!!

I used Retin-A back in the day by prescription, but it's since been banned for some reason. Didn't hurt me.

I guess this doesn't help, huh? Sorry.

OK so, i was having the same trouble ur having. what i use, and it really helps is one minocycline cap (its a pill) and benziq wash. now the pill is prescription and i believe the benziq is too (its a cream) but it may not be since its a cream, but i would ask your doctor about those options. also, if u can't get those i would recommend Clearasil ultra, the clearer skin in 3 days. i was using that until i got a free sample of benziq, now benziq may not be available, so if you can't get either the minocycline or benziq i would try the Clearasil.

well when i had acne problems nothing worked! i even tried that proactiv stuff but that was just a waste. so i started using clearasil and it helped clear my skin really well! but everyones skin is different, maybe you should talk to your doctor or your dermatologist? thats if your acne is really bad.

Well, I have used proactiv and it was a total waste for me. Then I used Clean & Clear. It didn't work for me either. Now I use Differin. It is expensive but my acne is slowly clearing up. Yay!
