Does Isotretinoin acne medicine cause serious side effects?
Mу dermatologist recomended mе tο hаνе Isotretinoin medicine fοr severe acne. Bυt bу thе state οf Nеw Jersey уου need a release form bесаυѕе οf thе side effects. I јυѕt want tο know іf thе side effects hаνе happened tο anyone lіkе illusions, change οf mood,οr depression.
i have been taking isotretinion (accutane) since february, and i’ll probably stop in september. i honestly think you should go ahead and take it. NONE of the creams or pills worked for me except for this. the only major side effects i’ve had are nosebleeds and extremely dry skin. i don’t think illusions are a side effect, but depression and mood swings definately are. my mom took accutane when she was in college, and she never had any of them. they really aren’t side effects to worry about unless you suddenly notice it, or you get so depressed you want to kill yourself. if that happens, you should talk to your doctor immediately. i already had severe depression when i had started it, and i still do today. when i started accutane, i had also started taking zoloft (an antidepressant).
my dermatologist told me that, yes, you may become moodier while taking accutane, but depression is generally an uncommon side effect. i’d say you should definately start taking. not only does it get rid of your acne, it gets rid of it for good. (and by that, i mean that you might break out now and then, but nothing major.) i had terrible skin in the beginning of 2010, and six months later, i look so much better.
i hope this helps, and hopefully your skin will clear up!
In all honestly, I strongly suggest you not take it. It is similar to Accutane and all the people I know who have been on it have been miserable. The side effects are so severe, they far outweigh the benefits and in many cases, it only worsens your skin. If you really want to fix your skin, below is what I recommend. I added an example of what I use personally to help guide you but it is by no means necessary for you to purchase those items. I just like them personally because I purchased everything at Target except for one item and they are all relatively affordable. Just make sure you do this twice a day (morning and before bed). Please just try this for two weeks and if you don’t see any improvement in your skin, then go ahead with the Isotretinoin. What do you have to lose?
1. Eye makeup remover. A good one is half oil and half water and you will need to shake it up prior to using it then squirt some onto a cotton pad or ball and gently remove your eye makeup. It may leave your eyes feeling a little oily but the oil is good at removing all eye makeup, even waterproof mascara. You can run water on your eyes afterwards to get rid of the oily feeling if you’d like. Ex: Boots Botanics Soothing Eye Makeup Remover $5.99 at Target.
2. Cream cleanser. Use this with absolutely no water. Simply apply all over your dry face in circular motions, avoiding the eyes. You can then rinse it off with water or a damp washcloth but be sure not to use any water when you are first working this on your face. Ex: Boots Botanics Organic Facial Cleanser $7.99 at Target.
3. Alcohol-free toner. Squirt onto a couple of cotton pads and wipe all over your face, avoiding the eyes. Ex: Boots Expert Sensitive Gentle Refreshing Toner $3.99 at Target.
4. Daytime moisturizer and night cream. During the day you need a moisturizer to act as a barrier for your skin to hold in moisture. At night you need a cream that will replenish the moisture you lost throughout the day. Ex: Boots Expert Sensitive Light Moisturizing Lotion for day from Target (don’t remember the price but I know it’s around $8) and Boscia Recharging Night Moisture from Sephora which is $44. Night creams are more expensive and the right ones are difficult to find. Read the ingredients to make sure mineral oil isn’t one of the ingredients for the night cream you choose as that will not penetrate the skin.
5. Eye cream. Use an amount about half the size of a grain of uncooked rice (yes, very little). Rub this between both ring fingers and then gently tap it on the bone surrounding the eye moving all the way up to above your brows. Never rub this all over your eyelids. Eyes age the most and the fastest so eye cream will help prevent premature aging. You should use one even if you are young and don’t have wrinkles yet. Ex: Boots Botanics Organic Face Moisturizing Eye Cream $14.99 from Target.
6. Yogurt. Go to the grocery store and pick up a lemon, orange, or pineapple flavored yogurt (make sure the yogurt isn’t the kind with fruit at the bottom but is actually that fruit flavor) and then apply it all over your clean face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. You can then rinse it off with lukewarm water. The active cultures in yogurt will help neutralize the bacteria in your pores so it will help heal any blemishes you have currently and also help prevent new ones. The citric acid from the lemon, orange, or pineapple will also help dissolve the top layer of your skin (just like using a scrub to exfoliate but much more gentle). You can do this every day if your skin is really bad or just 1-2 times a week as a preventative measure.
I hope this has helped but if you have a question, need me to clear something up, or want to know why I recommend each product, please feel free to e-mail me. You can do so through my profile.
I am a Dermatologist in the state of PA and specialize in Acne treatments. Isotretinoin is probably my least favorite acne medication to prescribe. Usually because of the side effects. If my patients acne isnt to severe I will prescribe a cream called Retin A (Tretinoin) as a cream NOT a gel. Along with an antibiotic called Keflex to permanently kill and destroy all of the acne in the area. If the acne is so severe.. this double therapy will not help and isotretinoin will be put into use. Isotretinoin has very severe side effects but in the end you will see the best results of your life!!! A lot of my patients complain when they are first put on it but then they become happy with the results of it. Ask your dermatologist if they can put you on that double therapy before you try to Acutane. If they say that your acne is too severe… Do the acutane!!! You will see the most amazing results in the end and you will never have to deal with the acne again.
My favorite acne medications are deffinetly the Retin A just because results start coming quick and the side effects aren’t as severe as Acutane.
Just remember with all bad things come good!!!!
